The Heritage Studies Department at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, is one of the departments within the Faculty of Creative Technology and Heritage, offering a Bachelor of Heritage Studies program with Honours. This program offers an elective in Heritage Conservation, designed to develop graduates' skills, knowledge, and ethics. The elective aims to provide students with a deep understanding of heritage through technical, innovative, and creative approaches. The program involves in-depth studies in disciplines related to artifacts, buildings, and museum studies, with a primary focus on heritage management. Students will benefit from integrated learning experiences, combining theoretical classroom sessions with field practicums. Continuous assessment and final evaluations each semester ensure comprehensive evaluation of students' understanding and skills.
The Heritage Conservation elective emphasizes the application of globally recognized conservation principles. Following guidelines from international organizations such as UNESCO and ICOMOS, including the Burra Charter and the 1999 Australia ICOMOS Charter, the program aims to ensure that conservation practices are in line with the National Heritage Act 2005. For building components, emphasis is placed on compliance with technical aspects of conservation. This includes damage analysis and recommendations for restoration. In terms of artifacts, the course provides training in conserving organic and inorganic collections using systematic and scientific methods. As for museology, the course covers collection management and digital museum development aspects. The elective aims to preserve and protect intangible archaeological and cultural heritage. This is achieved through research activities, documentation, and increasing awareness of heritage, with the aim of making the program a key reference center for heritage research and tourism.
